Updated: 7 days ago

Kevin Caron is an abstract sculptor who has exhibited across the United States, particularly in the American Southwest. He has almost two dozen permanent public installations installed at various locations across the U.S. Recent solo exhibitions in Arizona include Tempe Post Office Gallery, Tucson Museum of Art, TKCS Studios and Central Arts Plazain Phoenix, Walter Art Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, Central Arizona College, City of Surprise City Hall, and Chandler Center for the Arts. Kevin’s recent collective exhibitions include The Monastery in Peoria, Arizona, Monoflex Proto Gallery in South Korea, Arts HQ in Surprise, Arizona, Rice Polak Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Pima Community College East Campus in Tucson Arizona, Sculpture Tucson Festival in Tucson, Shemer Art Center in Phoenix, Las Laguna Gallery in California, and Sculpture Tucson.

Often resembling crystalized castles or organic, exotic foliage and fauna only imagined from reading a fantasy novel from authors such as Jules Verne, Kevin Caron delves deep into investigative structures. His methods are both analogue and automated. Ranging from working with his hands on steel to designing sculptures on his computer and executing them out with 3-D printing, as a result Kevin favors a variety of approaches to expressing himself. He is considered a pioneer in the field of 3-D printing as he is considered one of the first few sculptors to have used the technology to print life-sized works when the process was first released to the public.

The sculptures often strive towards the air as Kevin constructs abstract ‘towers’ which have both futuristic as well as fantastical aesthetics. Ranging from puristic steel silver colors to colorful displays of neon tones which gives his work the appearance of glass. These pristine, polished surfaces offer a study in unified three-dimensional compositions rather than a direct practice in texture. Although the sculptures are directed straight vertically, there remains a deep angular aesthetic in expressing curvature, especially in how the forms melt into each other, much like a vortex.

All the Way Up (Polished) (pictured above) remains one of Kevin Caron’s most complex pieces. The sculpture, fashioned with provocation much like a razor’s edge, also offers sensual curvature as the forms seem to seamlessly blend into each other in an organic fashion. Simultaneously expressing sensual curves as well as aggressive angular points much like a knife, All the Way Up reveals a dichotomy of opposing conceptual expressions.

Kevin Caron can be described as an immense giant in the field of contemporary sculpture. His direct as well as indirect approach to image-making entails a philosophical purpose in expressing himself through conceptual form. These fantastical and futuristic designs reflect a purpose in composing structure to reflect both emotional impulses as well as to be influential regarding integrative applications. His art reveals mathematically-inspired designs as well as computer processes, which offer a variety in his approach and method of expression. Kevin’s works are deeply imaginative and indicate a desire to inspire other fields of study such as architecture, design principles, engineering as well as other artists. These ‘scapes’ of steel and plasma-like neon configurations reflect an imaginative mind who wishes to express structure beyond the confines of rigidity and conformity.
